Outline and Purpose of the Course Learn about basic technologies on computer networks, which are the indispensable basis of the ubiquitous network society. The idea of the Internet, basic concepts of the Internet architecture and the protocols are lectured. Visions for the future are also presented.
Course Goals Students will understand the principles of computer networks and will be able to explain how they work. Students will be able to create simple programs to communicate over the Internet.

The Transport Layer,3times,- Principles of a reliable transport protocol - The User Datagram Protocol (UDP) - The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)
The Network Layer,3times,- Principles  * Datagram and virtual circuit  * routing - Internet Protocol (IP) - Routing in IP networks
The Datalink Layer and the Local Area Networks,2times,- Principles - Media Access Control - Datalink layer technologies
Network Security,1time,- Information security and network security - Cyber laws
Evaluation Methods and Policy Grading is based on the semester-end exam, and partially on reports and the attendance.

Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students are required to take the Kyoto University Information Security e-learning course.
