Numbering Code U-PHA00 2C202 LJ86 Year/Term 2022 ・ First semester
Number of Credits 2 Course Type Lecture
Target Year 2nd & 3rd year students Target Student
Language Japanese Day/Period Thu.2
Instructor name SHIN HYE-WON (Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences Associate Professor)
KATOH YOHEI (Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences Senior Lecturer)
Outline and Purpose of the Course The aim is to understand energy metabolism, which is the basis of biological activities, and the synthesis and decomposition of the sugars, lipids, amino acids, and nucleotides that make up the body. In addition, students will deepen their understanding of the regulation and integration of these metabolisms by hormones such as insulin and glucagon, and learn about the mechanism that maintains homeostasis in the body.
Course Goals Understand energy metabolism, the basis of biological activities.
Be able to explain the synthesis and decomposition of the sugars, lipids, amino acids, and nucleotides that make up the body.
Develop an understanding of the regulation and integration of these metabolisms by hormones such as insulin and glucagon.
Be able to explain the mechanisms that maintain homeostasis in the body.
Schedule and Contents 1. Glycolysis
2. Gluconeogenesis
3. Pentose phosphate pathway

Evaluation Methods and Policy The evaluation will be based on the following; short tests 30%, final exam 70%
The evaluation will take into account whether students understand and can explain the basics involving the metabolism of sugars, lipids, amino acids, and nucleotides, as well as the regulation and integration of these metabolisms by hormones, and outline the mechanism that maintains homeostasis in the body, as described in the course objectives.
Course Requirements Make sure to have taken Biological Chemistry I in advance.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Review the previous lectures, before each of the three short tests.
