Outline and Purpose of the Course | Analytical Chemistry studies the separation, identification, and quantification of substances ; it is an important subject, which forms the basis for all sciences, not just pharmaceutical sciences. In Analytical Chemistry 1, lectures are given on the theory of analytical chemistry related to pharmaceutical sciences and the chemical analysis of pharmaceuticals and bio-related substances.
Course Goals |
Learn the basics of analytical experiments, significant figures, accuracy, precision, and error tolerance. Learn the basics of chemical equilibrium and learn about various titration methods. Learn about solvent extraction, chromatography, and electrophoresis. |
|||
Schedule and Contents |
1. Basic analytical experiments (instruments, reagents, weighing) 2. Significant figures, precision, accuracy, error tolerance 3. Basic chemical equilibrium 4. Acid-base balances 5. Neutralization titration 6. Non-water titration 7. Metal complexes 8. Chelatometric titration 9. Precipitation titration 10. Electrode potential 11. Redox titration 12. Solvent extraction 13. The principle of chromatography 14. Liquid, gas, and thin-layer chromatography 15. Electrophoresis |
|||
Evaluation Methods and Policy | Evaluation is based on the following: regular exams 90%; small tests carried out during each lecture: 10%. Students will be regularly tested on discussions about the basics of chemical experiments and chemical equilibrium, as well as on their understanding of various titration methods, solvent extraction, chromatography, and electrophoresis. Small tests will be used to assess their knowledge of the lecture content.
Course Requirements | None
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) | Students are expected to read the textbook beforehand to prepare for lectures, assessing which parts they do not understand. Students are also expected to review the content they have learned through exams and small tests.
