Outline and Purpose of the Course In recent years, space development has been progressing at a rapid pace. The expansion of human activities beyond the Earth will bring us various benefits and pose new ethical challenges. In this lecture, you will learn about the ethical issues associated with space development and the ethical debates surrounding them.
Course Goals - To understand the various ethical issues associated with space development.
- To understand the views and arguments of philosophers on space ethical issues.
Schedule and Contents Basically the lectures will be given by Shimizu. The current plan is as follows, though there may be some changes according to progress.

1. An overview of space ethics
2. Space ethics and normative ethics
3. Myth-based space advocacy
4. Manned Space Program
5. Accident risks of spacecrafts
6. The Earth's environment and space development
7. Space debris
8. An interim session: some advice for writing the term paper
9. Terraforming
10. Space business
11. National security and space development
12. Extraterrestrial resource development
13. Robots and space development
14. The duty to support the survival of humanity
15. Wrap-up
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluation will be based on the term paper. The evaluation will mainly be based on the achievement of the class goal (understanding of the content of the lectures), but additional considerations will be given to papers that include original research and thought.
Course Requirements Though it is not mandatory, it is desirable to take the "introduction to ethics" class before this class or simultaneously.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Before the class meeting: though not required, it is preferable to read the relevant chapter of the textbook beforehand.
After the class meeting: thinking about the issues discussed in the class; reading papers introduced in the class.
