Outline and Purpose of the Course This seminar aims to prepare and train students for writing their undergraduate theses. It starts by clarifying the differences between “studying” and “researching.” Students will deepen their understanding of preparing a thesis according to the necessary steps, such as defining the research problems, articulating arguments and providing supporting evidence, finding appropriate references (and listing them), adding footnotes or endnotes and citations, and more.
Course Goals The goal for students planning to submit their undergraduate thesis this year is to complete the thesis. Other students should support each presenter’s research by listening to the presentations and asking questions. These experiences will help students learn “what to do,” “how to pursue,” and “how to present” for their own research. For third-year students, the goal is to narrow down the topic of their undergraduate thesis through these tasks.
Schedule and Contents Week 1: Orientation: Procedures for research presentations; verify the approximate schedule
Weeks 2 and 3: Reports on master’s theses and undergraduate theses from the previous academic year
Weeks 4-14: Research reports by graduate students and students planning to submit their undergraduate thesis
Students will take turns presenting their research topics from the planning stage of their theses. The course will discuss each topic and provide comments. Between presentations, the students will also check the form and format of academic papers, such as footnotes or endnotes, references, and citations. The course will also introduce the techniques and precautions for writing papers; students will read papers published in academic journals as necessary. Third-year students will also be asked to prepare a report on the topic of their undergraduate theses.
