Outline and Purpose of the Course This course offers an introduction to Gandhari language and historical grammar of Middle Indic languages. Along with language and literature, the special script for writing Gandhari texts, namely Kharosthi script will be learnt as well. The reading materials include Khotan Dharmapada and inscription of King Senavarma. Therefore, this course provides glimpses into development of early Buddhism and early history of India as well as deposit of Buddha’s relics.
Course Goals The participants will learn Kharosthi script, Gandhari language and historical grammar of Indic linguistics.

Week #02 Introduction: Gandhara, Kharosthi script and Gandhari corpus
Week #03 Introduction: Learn Kharosthi script and bilingual coins
Week #04 Grammar: Historical grammar of Middle Indic
Week #05 to #08 Reading: Dharmapada from Khotan
Week #09 to #14 Reading: Senavarma inscription

Evaluation Methods and Policy Active participation in the classroom, review of studied materials, homework and final exam.
Assessment will be based on class performance (50%) and final exam (50%)
Course Requirements Sanskrit knowledge is desired, but not necessary.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Preparation of reading materials to be discussed and analysed in class.
