Outline and Purpose of the Course |
We teach the Parthian language of Maniism. Parthian is classified as Middle Iranian, along with Middle Persian, and is classified as Western Iranian. The remaining materials are from the 1st century BC, and inscriptions, currency inscriptions, seals, and documents written on parchment paper and paper are known, but Mani books account for most of the documents. The Parthian Mani literature was discovered in Turpan, Xinjiang, China, and has an important position in the study of Iranian language history because it is older than the Mani Medieval Persian language. It is also suggested that classical Armenian not only borrowed vocabulary from Parthian, but was also influenced in terms of syntax, and knowledge of this language is essential for understanding classical Armenian. In this class, after an overview of research history and grammar, we will explain the methodology and possibilities of literature language research using unearthed literature through reading representative texts. |
Course Goals |
Students will learn the grammar of Mani-Parthian language and will be able to read literature by themselves using tool books through reading Romanized transcribed texts, and will also gain an overview of the language changes from ancient to modern Persian. In addition, students will develop the ability to engage in literature language research by understanding the relationship between letters and the language system behind them and the methodology of language research through literature materials. |
