Outline and Purpose of the Course A summary of viewpoints and methodologies in human geography, touching upon examples of specific research and the background of its academic history. Its purpose is to deepen understanding of what "geography" means to individual people, environmental and human relationships, and basic concepts of space, positioning, and location, while noting the background of its academic history. It is a (required) introductory course for persons specializing in geography.
Course Goals Able to understand and discuss how the basic viewpoints and research themes of human geography have been studied and formulated, while following the development of its academic history.

2nd Maps in the mind - Mental maps
3rd Space cognition and its development - The maps of children
4th The experience of location - Humanism/Phenomenological geography
5th Feng Shui geography - Geography as folk wisdom
6th Climate and civilization - Environment determinism and modern geography
7th Environment modification and cultural scenery - Geography of the New Continent
8th Genealogy of Japanese climate theory - Watsuji and Berque
9th Distribution and patterns - Spatial interaction
10th The spatial order created by cities - Theory of location and central place theory
11th Space and society - Temporal geography and spatial organization
12th Spatial representation - The political science of maps
13th The social space of identity - Gender geography
14th Geography education and the nation - The politics of geographical knowledge

Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluated according to performance (30%) and final paper (70%). The former is based upon reaction papers in each class session. The latter are evaluated based upon attainment level of class objectives. All done through PandA.
Course Requirements Students are expected to take Geography (Course I).
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students should actively expose themselves to related papers and literature, including reference literature introduced during class, and thereby deepen their interest in pertinent issues.
