Outline and Purpose of the Course This lecture aims, starting from the masterpieces of Fergus Millar (1935-2019), to understand what Millar has done for the study of the Roman Empire and what has developed after his innovative contributions. By so doing, this lecture will touch on various essential themes of scholarly discussions concerning the history of the Roman Empire. Possible topics will include: the political culture of the Roman Republic; Roman emperors; Roman impacts on provinces; Greeks under the Roman Empire; Jews; and the Orient in the Imperial period.
