Outline and Purpose of the Course An important figure in German idealism, Hegel helped bring social philosophy to the forefront of philosophy. This course reviews Germany’s social philosophy from the 19th century to the 20th century. Social philosophy?the study and interpretation of society and social institutions in terms of ethical values rather than empirical relations?was formed in response to the social struggles of the times and Hegel’s influence and opposition. This course aims to deepen students’ understanding of our modern society.
Course Goals Understand and acquire knowledge of philosophical history.
Acquire the ability to think philosophically about social issues.

Week 2: Hegel: approval and morality
Week 3: The death of Hegel and the Left Hegelians
Week 4: Feuerbach
Week 5: Early Marx (1) The Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844
Week 6: Early Marx (2) “Notes on James Mill”
Week 7: Das Kapital (1) commodity and reification
Week 8: Das Kapital (2) a focus on labor process theory
Week 9: Marx after Das Kapital
Week 10: Weber’s rationalization theory (1) What is modernity?
Week 11: Weber’s rationalization theory (2) another reification
Week 12: Luk?cs’s theory of reification (1) Marx and Weber
Week 13: Luk?cs’s theory of reification (2) reconstruction of German idealism
Week 14: Being and Time by Heidegger as social philosophy
Week 15: Summary
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluation will be based on interim reports and regular exams (written).
