Outline and Purpose of the Course Based on the content learned in the previous semester's Sociology Seminar I, we will study foundational theories of sociology by reading Japanese translations of several books written by major sociologists from Parsons on (Parsons, Luhman, Habermas, Bourdieu, Giddens, etc.). At each class session, presenters will create and present a summary of their parts of the text, including a digest and glossary. Then, all class members will participate in a question and answer session based on the report content.
Course Goals Study the characteristics of sociological concepts, the approaches of individual sociologists, and the points at issue in modern sociological theory by tracing the thoughts of sociologists. Cultivate a better understanding of sociological thinking.
Schedule and Contents Week 1: Introduction
Weeks 2-14: Intensive Reading of Fundamental Texts in Sociology Theory
Week 15: Summary
Evaluation Methods and Policy Assessments based on class participation (report summaries, comments, and questions) (50%), and reports (50%).
Course Requirements Preferable to have already taken Seminar I.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Even students not making a report must read the text and write short questions and comments. The reporter will be asked to prepare their report well in advance by writing a summary of the text, as well as listing comments related to terminology, etc. that will be necessary for understanding the text.
