Outline and Purpose of the Course The Southeast Asian continent is home to a wide variety of languages, including Thai, Burmese, and Vietnamese. On the other hand, many linguistic features that are common beyond the lineage are also observed. Chinese and island languages adjacent to the region also show continental Southeast Asian characteristics. In this class, we will outline the various languages of continental Southeast Asia from various perspectives such as phonology, form, syntax, vocabulary, meaning, letter, lineage, typology, linguistics, and language documentation, and consider how these languages are positioned from the viewpoint of linguistic diversity, universality, and regionality.
Course Goals Acquire basic knowledge of Southeast Asian continental languages.
Understanding the languages of continental Southeast Asia from both universality and diversity.
Develop the ability to analyze language from a linguistic viewpoint.
-Be aware of issues and be able to independently search for research themes
Schedule and Contents Read the text carefully and discuss the content. The progress varies greatly depending on the content of the article and the level of proficiency and number of participants, so it is not possible to indicate the schedule for each episode, but the report should be read so that it can be reported twice per person.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Regular attitude score (attendance) (50%) and reports (50%).
Course Requirements It is desirable, but not essential, to take an introductory or introductory language class. Prior knowledge of Southeast Asian languages is not required.
