Outline and Purpose of the Course This course focuses on the history of modern and contemporary Japan, focusing on the history of politics and diplomacy, and presents perspectives and issues to understand modernity, the world system, nationalism, colonialism, human migration, and historical perceptions of modern and contemporary Japan as part of world history, especially East Asian history.
Course Goals Basic issues related to the history of modern and contemporary Japan, especially the history of political and diplomatic relations, are discussed based on concrete grounds.
・By understanding world history, especially modern and contemporary Japanese history as a part of East Asian history, we will acquire a perspective of relativizing conventional national history.
-Students understand that history is a constant "question" to the world of the past, unlike the acquisition of mere knowledge, and can ask questions on their own based on their knowledge so far.
Schedule and Contents Summarize the results of careful reading and discuss all remaining issues and questions. If you cannot read it to a nice point, this episode may be replenished.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Each time, it is evaluated according to the assignment to be submitted after class.
Course Requirements Students who belong to the Department of Contemporary History must take Classes I and II in Contemporary History by graduation and earn a total of 4 credits. Note that, to obtain 4 credits, you cannot take 2 credits for I or 2 credits for II.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Read as many references as you can to introduce in the class.
