Outline and Purpose of the Course Italian literature has produced numerous masterpieces from the middle ages to modern times. Especially from the 13th to 16th century, vernacular literature influenced not only Italy but culture throughout Europe. In this second semester course, we shall introduce the main poets and works of 15th to 16th century, and provide an overview of the history of Italian language and literature.
Course Goals ①Master basic knowledge of Italian language and literature.
②Deepen understanding of key concepts in Western literature.
Schedule and Contents Class shall proceed according to the following plan.

1st session: Introduction

2nd - 14th: (Two to three classes devoted to a single subject)
・Humanism
・Tales of chivalry (Boyard and Ariosto)
・Language controversies
・Machiavelli and The Prince
・Impresa and metaphor
・Quest for creative theory (Torquato Tasso's discourse on poetry)

15th: Feedback
Evaluation Methods and Policy Performance(30%), final paper(70%)
