Outline and Purpose of the Course This course is aimed to help students to develop their research skills for studying the history of Japanese language, especially in terms of its vocabulary. In the earlier part of the seminar, students are going to take some lectures on study of vocabulary of a past era, take instructions on how to make a research, and try reading related papers.

Then each student is going to pick up a word or two, do some research for that and make a presentation, analyzing the word synchronically or diachronically. In this course, outputting your research and analysis appropriately is also an important point for evaluation.
Course Goals The goals of this course are to:
(1) be able to understand how to collect examples of a word, and analyze its meanings and usages based on these examples.
(2) be able to explain your research and analysis by both oral presentations and papers.

Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Preparation: To get a basic knowledge of the topic word by dictionaries or reference books.
Review: To review comments on a presentation and apply them to your own presentation.
