Outline and Purpose of the Course It is not enough to just read textbooks and general texts to acquire a point of view of sociological topics; one must also read the great works of sociology. In this course, we will take turns reading exemplary works by major sociologists (Marx, Durkheim, Weber, Simmel, Merton, Goffman, Schutz, Coleman) with a focus on the classics of sociology and, specifically, the sections relatively suited to students who are beginners. At each class session, presenters will create and present a summary of their parts of the text, including a digest and a glossary. Following this, all class members will participate in a question and answer session based on the report content.
Course Goals Study the characteristics of sociological concepts and the approaches of individual sociologists by tracing the thoughts of exemplary sociologists. Learn the sociological way of viewing things.
Schedule and Contents Week 1: Introduction
Weeks 2-14: Intensive Reading of Fundamental Texts in Sociology Theory
Week 15: Summary
Evaluation Methods and Policy Assessments based on class participation (report summaries, comments, and questions) (50%), and reports (50%).
Course Requirements None
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Even students not presenting a report must read the text and write short questions and comments. The reporter will be asked prepare their report well in advance by writing a summary of the text, as well as listing comments related to terminology, etc. that will be necessary for understanding the text.
Textbooks Textbooks/References Instructions will be given in class; students will be asked to purchase several books that are available in small paperback form (others will be distributed as copies).
