Outline and Purpose of the Course |
This course reads the below book in turn. Although the author, Neil Smith, is well-known as a social geographer, the book is one of important literature that includes issues and topics across multiple subfields of human geography such as political geography, economic geography and historical geography. This course aims to develop students' reading comprehension of English materials and understanding of the fundamental concepts of human geography. A participant translates the assigned texts and prepares a handout for each presentation. Other participants must read those texts in advance for each class and give a comment or question at least once in discussion. Supplementary explanations on the texts are provided during the class, with using materials such as Neil Smith's other literature or conceptions that have been introduced by Japanese geographers. Evaluation Methods and Policy |
Presentation is assigned to all participants at least once. The final grade will be evaluated according to effort of presentation (50 %) and active participation in class discussion (50%). A participant who copy-pastes the trasnlated texts by auto translation tools will fully lose presentation score (50%). A participant who absents from the class over four times without special reason cannot get the credits. |
