Outline and Purpose of the Course Italian literature has produced numerous masterpieces from the middle ages to modern times. Especially from the 13th to 16th century, vernacular literature made a deep impact not only on the Italian peninsular but throughout Europe. In this first semester course, we shall introduce mainly the principle poets and works of the 13th to 14th century, while providing an overview of the history of Italian language and literature.
Course Goals ①Master basic knowledge of Italian language and literature.
②Deepen understanding of key concepts in Western literature.
Schedule and Contents Class shall proceed according to the following plan.

1st session: Introduction

2nd - 14th: (Two to three classes devoted to a single subject)
・The establishment of the Italian language (vernacular)
・ Originators of Italian literature and Sicilian poets
・On Dante and The Divine Comedy
・Petrarca and Canzoniere
・Boccaccio and Decameron

15th: Feedback
Evaluation Methods and Policy performance(30%)
final paper(70%)
