Outline and Purpose of the Course |
This is a companion seminar to the special lecture on causality, open in the same semester. We read & learn related literature and mathematical/statistical tools introduced in the lecture in order to understand them more deeply. Joint enrollment with the lecture is recommended, but not required. |

Course Goals | Through close reading on primary and secondary literature, students will be able to (1) analyze themselves historical as well as modern philosophical discussions on causality; (2) understand statistical methods such as correlation and regression analyses; and (3) critically examine causal claims based on these methods. | ||

We will read the following materials ・D. Hume, An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding ・J. L. Mackie, Causes and Conditions ・C. Hitchcock, Probabilistic Causation (SEP) ・W. Salmon, Causality: Production and Propagation ・P. Menzies, Counterfactual Theories of Causation (SEP) ・大塚淳, ベイズネットから見た因果と確率 Each week a presenter gives a summary of the reading and leads the discussion. Every participant is required to actively engage in discussion. Presence alone does not warrant a credit. |

Evaluation Methods and Policy | Evaluation is based on presentation and participation in class and discussion. Active participation to the discussion is highly evaluated. | ||

Study outside of Class (preparation and review) | Before each class, students are required to closely read the assignments and take notes a question. A presenter is expected to prepare a resume or other material (if needed) and topics/questions to be discussed during the class. |
