Outline and Purpose of the Course The Penguin Books of English Short Storiesに所収されている短編小説の読解と、これに関する小論文の作成、ならびに討論を通じて、英文学作品から論文のテーマを見つけ出し、英語の論文を執筆する訓練を行う。
Course Goals 英文テクストの読解力を発展させ、アカデミックな論文作成の基礎を理解する。
Schedule and Contents テクストの精読と内容の理解は各自で済ませていることを前提として、毎回の授業では以下の二種類の作業を繰り返す。詳細については第1週に説明するので必ず出席すること。
a) 討論を通じて作品の理解を深め、問題点を共有する。
b) 担当者（受講者数に左右されるが毎回1-2名）がその作品についての短い論文（英文1,500語程度）を予め全員に回覧した上で、口頭発表する。その後全員でその論文について討論する。

毎回の予定は以下の通り。一覧中のa)、b)はそれぞれ上記の二種類の作業を示す。

Evaluation Methods and Policy 討論を含む授業参加30％、授業中に発表される小論文70％
Course Requirements 後期の英語学英文学演習IIと今年度中に合わせて履修するのが望ましい。
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) テクスト、担当者の小論文とも十分に内容を理解した上で授業に臨むこと。
