Outline and Purpose of the Course | In this seminar, we will conduct a close reading of Edward Sapir's Language, which has continued to be widely read since it was published in 1921. This book, which takes up diverse languages and language phenomena, and also includes profound examinations of language in general, still has a great deal of content that should be tackled head-on by those planning to research language, even nearly 100 years after it was first published. On the other hand, although it was written for a general audience, it does occasionally get obscure; accurately understanding this book will require knowledge beyond interpreting English texts. In this seminar, we will read Language while referencing multiple translations, including three Japanese editions, other papers by Sapir, and other related materials.
Course Goals | Be able to examine language in general based on sound knowledge of many individual languages.
