Outline and Purpose of the Course	In this seminar, we will conduct a close reading of Edward Sapir's Language, which has continued to be widely read since it was published in 1921. This book, which takes up diverse languages and language phenomena, and also includes profound examinations of language in general, still has a great deal of content that should be tackled head-on by those planning to research language, even nearly 100 years after it was first published. On the other hand, although it was written for a general audience, it does occasionally get obscure; accurately understanding this book will require knowledge beyond interpreting English texts. In this seminar, we will read Language, while also referencing multiple translations, including three Japanese editions, other papers by Sapir, and other related materials.
Course Goals	Be able to examine language in general based on sound knowledge of many individual languages.
Schedule and Contents	At each class session, students will work in pairs of one undergraduate and one graduate student, using a handout to explain the part of the text they have been assigned and discuss problem topics. This year, all classes will be led by Shuntaro Chida. Week 1: Introduction of Materials, Class Procedures Week 2: Preface Weeks 3-5: Chapter 1 Weeks 6-7: Chapter 2 Weeks 8-9: Chapter 3 Weeks 10-12: Chapter 4 Weeks 13-15: Chapter 5
Evaluation Methods and Policy	Sum of the following: (1) presentations in class (30%), (2) active participation in discussions (10%), (3) final report (60%).
