Outline and Purpose of the Course Intellectual struggles of Hui Muslims (Chinese-speaking Muslims) for the purpose of adjusting Islam to Chinese society have played an important role in building amicable relations between Islamic believers and non-believers in China. On the other hand, the same activities sometimes promoted inner division among Hui Muslims. For example, Ma Dexin (d.1874), a prominent Hui Muslim scholar in Yunnan, South West China, added "Chinese" elaborations to a critical teaching against veneration of saints he had taken from a Muslim scholar in Mecca, and preached it in China. Ma Dexin's disciples also followed this activity, and intensified conflicts about veneration of saints among Hui Muslims. From this historical process, we will examine relationship between indigenization of Islam by Muslim minorities and stability of the host society.
