Outline and Purpose of the Course In order to master basic knowledge of Japanese medieval history and reading comprehension of historical materials, students ① closely read historical materials on medieval estates, and ② read basic papers.
The objective of ① is to take historical materials on Oyama-sho in Tanba Province (contained in History of Hyogo Prefecture), interpret each word accurately, and master basic background knowledge on politics, society, and culture.
In ②, key papers on Japanese medieval history are carefully selected, including results from the latest research. Their important points are organized, and then any significance or issues regarding research are discussed.
Course Goals Acquire basic knowledge on Japanese medieval history and reading comprehension skills for historical materials.
Schedule and Contents 1st session: Introduction
Summarize Oyama-sho in Tanba Province and historical materials. Also introduce dictionaries and reference books that may be used, inform students on how the class will proceed and presentation methods, and determine assignments for attending students.
2nd - 29th session: Close reading of historical materials on Oyama-sho in Tanba Province and read basic papers
In each session, closely read several documents. Assigned persons will prepare outlines and interpret historical materials, and also discuss the political, social, and cultural backgrounds under which materials were produced. In addition, in readings of basic papers, content will be summarized in outlines, and their historical significance and issues will be laid out. In class, discussions will be deepened by full participation of all students based on assigned presentations.
30th session: Conclusion
Summarize results of close reading of historical materials and reading of papers, and discuss future issues.
Evaluation Methods and Policy According to performance (40 points) and final paper (60 points).
