Outline and Purpose of the Course Seminar III is a forum for undergraduate students (3rd and 4th year), graduate students, and faculty members who belong to the Department of Contemporary History. The seminar aims at sharing knowledge of the members of the department, and improving research of each member.
One or two students are designated as a reporter for each class. The reporter presents his/her research topics and the status and future project of his/her research activities. Discussion follows in which all the participants, including instructors, will consider how to develop and refine research activities of the reporter(s).
Students are expected to make their presentation clear-cut while at the same time substantiated by historical primary materials, as training in making such presentations also serves to improve academic writings. Attending students other than reporters can broaden their knowledge on historical topics as well as methodologies of historical research. They are also expected to make comments on the presentation.
All the students belonging to the Contemporary History Department have to take this class. The 4th year students are expected to report the status of their research activities that should culminate in their graduation thesis. The 3rd year students are expected to learn the methodology and find out where their research activities should point to.
Course Goals 1. For students planning to graduate in the academic year, the completion of a valuable graduation thesis is the goal.
2. For other undergraduate students, the goal is to find out research topic of each, as well as to learn methods of historical research and better presentation.
Schedule and Contents Feedback is provided in the discussion and instruction at each class.
