Outline and Purpose of the Course We will read introductory books on social theory in English, while also learning about several major issues in social theory and how to read English-language texts on sociology. The texts we will use present and explain works by both classical thinkers and the social theories they influenced, such as Marx, Durkheim, Weber, Simmel, and Freud, on topics such as capitalism, social evolution, social behavior, social order, and the unconscious.
At each class session, presenters will create and present a summary of their parts of the text, including a digest and a glossary. Following this, all class members will think about and discuss the reported content.
Course Goals Master foundational knowledge on the historical development, basic themes, and main concepts of social theory. Accurately understand the meaning and treatment of central concepts in sociology, as well as their correspondence with translational equivalents, and cultivate the knowledge required for reading sociological works in English.
Schedule and Contents Weeks 1-14: Reading of textbook. Each class session, eight or nine pages will be assigned to approximately two students, who will report on the content.

Evaluation Methods and Policy Assessments based on report summaries (50%) and exams (50%).
Course Requirements None
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students must come to class having read the text each time. Furthermore, the students reporting should be particularly aware of how to translate sociology terms as they draft their summaries.
