Outline and Purpose of the Course	How do Germans respond to the "German modern crisis" in the early 21st century, confronting the new realities that have appeared with late modern social changes? Continuing from the previous semester, we will closely read several chapters of German texts that grapple with these sociological themes, examining the different responses to the problems common in modern advanced societies that were produced, how these responses developed, and compare these with Japan. Students will each be responsible for part of the text at each class (roughly two pages per class session) and will prepare a Japanese translation, glossary, and summary to distribute and present to the class. We will examine the report content of the work prepared by all participants.
Course Goals	Along with learning to read sociological texts in German, we will also study various structural problems in modern German society. The objective is to acquire the skills to be able to accurately read and understand sociological texts in German on one's own, while consulting a dictionary.
Schedule and Contents	Week 1: Introduction 　Explanation of class aims, introduction of texts, assignment of leaders. Weeks 2-14: Reading Text in Turns 　We plan to read around two pages per class session and to finish reading approximately three chapters. Week 15:　Summary 　Summary of important items learned.
Evaluation Methods and Policy	Generally assessed by class participation (report summaries). However, if there is a large number of students, exams may also be set.
Course Requirements	Have taken at least an elementary level, and if possible an intermediate level, German course in the previous academic year. No knowledge of sociology is required. We will read different chapters from the same text used in the previous semester's special lecture, but the chapters are independent of one another, so students can start this course in the second semester.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review)	Students will be asked to prepare the section of text that will be read in each class session.
