Outline and Purpose of the Course For students with no prior knowledge of the Korean language, this class will give instruction on grammar, pronunciation, elementary grammar, and elementary conversation, starting from the basics, while also touching on the culture and history of the Korean peninsula and South Korea.
Course Goals The objective by the end of the course is to be able to read Hangul and have simple conversations.
Schedule and Contents As a general rule we will progress through the material as follows, but this is will be adjusted as appropriate depending on the level of comprehension.
Week 1: Orientation, Review of First Semester Study Material
Weeks 2-14: Grammar and Conversation. We will progress through approximately one chapter of material at each class session, but this will be adjusted as appropriate depending on comprehension level. We will also plan for regular summarizing and review time.
Week 15: Final Exam, Feedback
Evaluation Methods and Policy Class participation (30%) and semester-end and year-end exams (70%).
Course Requirements Because this course is a continuation of the first semester, students must have either taken the elementary level in the first semester or have an academic history with the equivalent knowledge.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Preparation: Look over the text, conversation sentences, and new vocabulary before each class.
Review: Organize the study material from each class to allow comprehension to take root.
