Outline and Purpose of the Course This seminar aims to provide students with proficiency in academic German, through the reading of Jan Assmann's "Das kulturelle Gedaechtnis: Schrift, Erinnerung und politische Identitaet in fruehen Hochkulturen (1992)". The concept of "das kulturelle Gedaechtnis" has been making a great impact on historical studies. Taking part in this seminar, students will understand how this concept can be applied to the study of ancient worlds.
Course Goals - Acquiring reading proficiency in academic German.

- Understanding the importance of the concept of "das kulturelle Gedaechtnis" and the possibility of its application to the study of ancient worlds.

- Reading the textbook (13 classes)
Jan Assmann's "Das kulturelle Gedaechtnis: Schrift, Erinnerung und politische Identitaet in fruehen Hochkulturen (1992)"

- Examination (1 class)
Evaluation Methods and Policy Students are evaluated based on their performance in the seminar (50 percent) and the examination (50 percent).
Course Requirements Students are expected to have completed elementary German grammar.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students are required to work on the text and improve their proficiency in German.
