Outline and Purpose of the Course [Class summary]
Our aim is to construct a history of medieval religion from a new perspective, by verifying the present state and issues with research into Japanese medieval history, and covering the overall medieval period. This year, we shall mainly discuss the relationship between gods (divinities) and Buddha (Buddhism) . We shall address issues in the history of religion, while aiming not for a narrow approach, but a broad or cultural-based one incorporating politics, socioeconomics, religion, and thought.
[Class objectives]
The purpose of the course is for attending students to acquire the skills to write papers for developing their own theories. Thus, we shall aim to cultivate the necessary critical and logical analysis skills.
Course Goals Able to acquire the skills needed to author graduate papers by studying examples of specific research presented in class and critically verifying their content. In other words, develop the ability to acquire the verification methods that form the basis of historiography, ways of dealing with past theories, and the ability to logically construct one's own theories.

NOTE: The above content may change depending on progress in students' own research.
Evaluation Methods and Policy  Final paper (50%) and short papers scheduled to be done in class (50%).
 Evaluation criteria for papers is whether students logically or empirically argue their own opinions.
