Outline and Purpose of the Course The goal is to acquire the basic knowledge of Latin grammar. Documents about law and science as well as philosophy and literature have been written in Latin from ancient Rome till recent times. It is impossible to understand Western civilization without Latin.
Course Goals To be able to read Latin documents of ancient, medieval and early modern periods.
Schedule and Contents Sessions will make progress in accordance with the textbook. After grammatical explanation students do exercises in translation from Latin into Japanese. Since conjugation is all in Latin, we practice conjugations repeatedly. Students will learn the first half of the textbook in the first semester, and the second half in the second semester. After finishing the textbook, we will read easy Latin text.

The first semester
1 The history and the structure of Latin language
2 - 29 Two lessons will be given a session.
30 Confirmation of comprehension

The second semester
1 - 15 Two lessons will be given a session.
16 - 30 We will read Latin texts.
Final examination
Evaluation Methods and Policy participation in class 60%
final exam 40%
Course Requirements No preliminary knowledge is required.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students are expected to do exercises appointed in the class.
