| Outline and Purpose of the Course |
We will investigate the relation between oral/textual tradition (Tibetan: thos pa), philosophical inquiry (bsam pa) and meditative practices (sgom pa) in Tibet, by focusing on the literature of theories of meditation and of spiritual advice. We will provide first a general overview of such various literary genres and of the history of meditation and yoga in Tibet. Then we will focus especially on the tradition of the School of the Ancients (rNying ma pa), following its classification of Buddhist teachings which culminates in the Great Perfection (rDzogs chen), considered as the pinnacle of both sUtra-s and tantra-s. We will read a selection of texts by Klong chen Rab 'byams pa (1308-1363), 'Jigs med gling pa (1730-1798), etc. We will intend to elucidate such materials by situating them in the broader history of Buddhist philosophy, psychology and epistemology. Especially, we will consider two main cognitive faculties, "mindfulness" and "clear comprehension" (dran pa dang shes bzhin), and their training in connection to the soteriological question of the recognition of the "nature of mind" (sems nyid). |
