Outline and Purpose of the Course Sanskrit is a classical language of South Asia and can be traced back to about 1200 BCE. To learn Sanskrit leads you to studies of philosophies, literatures and religions in India such as Buddhism, Jainism, Hiduism and so forth. In addition, Sanskrit, which has a long history and maintainability in grammar and phonology, is a required language to explicate and comprehend Proto-Indo-European language and is also helpful for researchers and students of linguistics and Western philosophy.
Course Goals - To learn the basic grammar of Classical Sanskrit.
- To read texts written in plain Sanskrit by acquiring basic grammar and vocabulary.
Schedule and Contents - Explanation of gammatical matters and reading practice are conducted in the same class.
- The progress of the classwork might be changed depending on the comprehension of students.


the 1st-3rd classes: Introduciton of Sanskrit, the phoneme, sandhi.
the 4th-13th classes: Declension of nouns and adjectives.(the 4th-8th: Vocalic stems, the 9th-13th: Consonantal stems)
the 14th-15th classes: Pronouns, Numerals, Compounds.


the 16th-22nd classes: Conjugation (the 16th-18th: Thematic/ the first conjugation, the 19th-22nd: Athematic/ the second conjugation)
the 23rd-29th classes: Future, Perfect, Passive, Causative, Aorist, Nonfinite verb.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Comprehension of exercises and enthusiasm for understanding: 50 points.
Term-end-examination: 50 points.

Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Preparation: Preparing answers to the exercises given as homework.
Reading the text about the grammar you will learn the next time.
