Outline and Purpose of the Course | This course offers an introduction to Tocharian languages and historical grammar of Indo-European languages. Based on the knowledge of Indo-European linguistics presented at the beginning of the course, synchronic and diachronic (historical) grammar of Tocharian including nominal and verbal systems will be explained. Reading materials include Sanskrit-Tocharian bilingual texts and Tocharian B Vinaya and Jataka with well-preserved parallel texts in Sanskrit and Chinese. | ||
Course Goals | The participants will be able to read Tocharian manuscripts in Brahmi script, learn the basic grammar of Tocharian A and B as well as rudiments of Indo-European linguistics. | ||
