Outline and Purpose of the Course Mo Yan (1955-) is one of the leading contemporary Chinese novelists and winner of the 2012 Nobel Prize for Literature. In this reading, we shall read his novel Farewell My Concubine, which draws upon Chinese classics.
Course Goals ・ Able to accurately understand common Chinese expressions from spoken to written language.
・Critically understand reception of the classics through contemporary literary arts.
Schedule and Contents 1st: Overview of the literature of Mo Yan, and checking use of text
2nd - 6th: Preface and Chapter 1
7th - 10th: Chapter 5
11th - 12th: Chapter 6
13th - 14th: Chapter 7
15th: Conclusion
Evaluation Methods and Policy Performance (including evaluation of Chinese pronunciation) 70%, exam 30%.
Course Requirements Fully master basic beginner Chinese skills in common core courses, and make an effort to accurately pronounce words. Presumes sufficient time will be spent on preparation, as marked in the outside class learning field. Does not apply to native Chinese speaking students.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Original Chinese text will be used, so time must be spent on preparation. Consistent time and effort should especially be devoted to looking up and memorizing pinyin.
