Outline and Purpose of the Course Chinese language is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and has its rich historical resources. This course is designed to familiarize advanced undergraduate students with basic knowledge of Modern Chinese grammar in historical perspectives.
Course Goals This course introduces Modern Chinese (Mandarin) grammar and serves to prepare students for more advanced courses in Chinese linguistics and Chinese literature. Students are expected at the end of the course to have gained a basic knowledge of the Modern Chinese (Mandarin) grammar and its historical development from Medieval Chinese to Modern Chinese. We will pay attention to Classical Chinese grammar.
Schedule and Contents 1. Introduction: Outline of Chinese language(s)
2. Modern Chinese writing system (simplified and traditional Chinese characters, Pinyin, Zhuyin Fuhao)
3. Mandarin and Chinese dialects (1): Perspective of language geography
4. Mandarin and Chinese dialects (2): Language contact, hypothesis of linguistic typogeography
5. History of grammatical and lexical study (Modern Chinese and Classical Chinese, loanwords in Chinese)
6. Mandarin part-of-speech, morphology (prefixs, suffixs and reduplication)
7. Phrase and sentence, negation, questions
8. Nouns, pronouns and classifiers
9. Verbs, adjectives and adverbs (1)
10. Verbs, adjectives and adverbs (2)
11. Tense and aspect
12. Complement and Object (1)
13. Complement and Object (2)
14. Voice (passive, causative, BA construction)
15. Verb series structure and prepositions
Evaluation Methods and Policy Attend class regularly and participate actively (20%). Students have to submit thirteen homework assignments every week (each about 1200-1600 characters in Japanese) (50%), final examination(30%).
