Outline and Purpose of the Course The purpose of this course is to present one part of the state of modern aesthetic studies and discussion. In this semester, we will read and reconstruct the aesthetics of Georg Simmel (1858-1918) from the perspective of "threshold", i.e. transformation of the quantity of stimuli to quality.
Course Goals Understand the status of modern aesthetics research and discussion, and be capable of applying this knowledge to one's own research.
Schedule and Contents The course will use the following plan, but be subject to change depending on student comprehension and interest. Students are expected actively participate in discussions.

Week 2: Prehistory of the Philosophy of Money (1900)
Week 3: Reconstructing the argument of the Philosophy of Money
Week 4: Reading the Philosophy of Money as aesthetics
Week 5: Aesthetics of "threshold" 1: "Aesthetics of Gravity" (1901) and "the Aesthetic Quantity" (1903)
Week 6: Aesthetics of "threshold" 2: "The Ruins" (1907) and "Philosophy of Landscape" (1913)
Week 7: Aesthetics of "threshold" 3: "The Picture Frame" (1902) and "Handle" (1905)
Week 8: Aesthetics of "threshold" 4: "Florence" (1906) and "Venice" (1907)
Week 9: Aesthetics of "threshold" 5: "Christianity and art" (1907) and "Germanic and Classical Style" (1918)
Week 10: Aesthetics of "threshold" 6: "On the Philosophy of Actor" (1908) and "The Actor and the Reality"
Week 11: Relationship to the contemporaries 1: Riegl
Week 12: Relationship to the contemporaries 2: Bergson
Week 13: Relationship to the contemporaries 3: Benjamin

Evaluation Methods and Policy Assessment of final report with the full score representing 80% + participation in the class 20%, multiplied by attendance rate. Reports will be assessed based on the level of achievement regarding the learning goals (detailed assessment standards will be explained when presenting assignment).
Course Requirements Preferable to have already completed the aesthetics lecture course.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) To be able to actively participate in discussions, students should examine both the works introduced in class and other related literature, try to apply the examples introduced in class to other examples and phenomena, and clarify their own awareness of the issues.
