Outline and Purpose of the Course The purpose of this course is to present (one of the) states of aesthetic studies through the reconstruction of the history of aesthetics. This semester, we will consider the concept of the "extensive clarity (claritas extensiva)", the key concept of the aesthetics of Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten (1714-62), also in consideration of its background and acceptance.
Course Goals ・Master methods of the research of (the history of) aesthetics based on primary documents.
・Improve discernment of various aspects of early modern aesthetics.
Schedule and Contents This class will progress according the following plan, but be subject to change depending on student background and comprehension. Students are expected actively participate in discussions.
Week 1: Introduction
Week 2: Background 1: Leibniz on the "minute perceptions"
Week 3: Background 2: Wolff on empirical psychology
Week 4: Baumgarten on the extensive clarity 1: Meditationes (1735)
Week 5: Baumgarten on the extensive clarity 2: Metaphysica (1739)
Week 6: Baumgarten on the extensive clarity 3: posthumous manuscripts written in the 1740's
Week 7: Baumgarten on the extensive clarity 4: Aesthetica (1750/58)
Week 8: Sulzer accepting Baumgarten
Week 9: Mendelssohn accepting Baumgarten
Week 10: Herder accepting Baumgarten
Week 11: Kant accepting Baumgarten 1: precritical period ( -1770)
Week 12: Kant accepting Baumgarten 2: Critique of the Pure Reason (1781)
Week 13: Kant accepting Baumgarten 3: Critique of the Power of Judgment (1790)

Evaluation Methods and Policy Assessment of final report with the full score representing 80% + participation in the class 20%, multiplied by attendance rate. Reports will be assessed based on the level of achievement regarding the learning goals (detailed assessment standards will be explained when presenting assignment).
Course Requirements Preferable to have already completed the aesthetics lecture course.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) To be able to actively participate in discussions on interpretations of the text, students should look over both the literature introduced in class and other references, and clarify their own understanding of the issues.
