Outline and Purpose of the Course In this course, by following the history of Vedic literature from the Vedas to the Upanishads, we will learn about the development of ancient Indian religious thought, as well as the fundamental characteristics of ancient Indian culture and society.
Course Goals Learn the fundamentals of Vedic literature, while also understanding the methods and usefulness of Sanskrit bibliography, which explains the actual conditions of ancient Indian society and culture, through literary materials.

Week 3: Rig Veda (1): Worship of the Gods of Nature
Week 4: Rig Veda (2): The Hero God Indra
Week 5: Rig Veda (3): Issues in the History of the Origins, Formation, and Development of Philosophical Thought
Week 6: Atharva Veda: Magic and Philosophical Thought
Week 7: Development of Vedic Rituals
Week 8: Yajurveda (1): Establishment of Ceremonial Acts and Explanation of Meaning
Week 9: Yajurveda (2): Diversification of Mantra Meanings
Week 10: Development of the Explanation of Rituals (Brahmana)
Week 11: What Are the Aranyakas? ("Belonging to the Wilderness")
Week 12: Formation of the Upanishads
Week 13: Development of the Upanishads
Week 14: Dharma Sutra

Evaluation Methods and Policy Final examination. Regarding the Veda literature, students will not be assessed based on general statements, but on their understanding of the class content.

Study outside of Class (preparation and review) No preparation is necessary. Students should take good notes, as I will write on the blackboard while lecturing. Students should improve their understanding by reviewing what they wrote after each class session.
