| Outline and Purpose of the Course | The purpose of this course is to acquire methods for thought and research regarding art history. This will be done by taking up specific issues in Western art history and deeply examining them from diverse points of view. In the first half of this year, we will study various aspects of the reception of flower still life painting, while also conducting detailed analyses of related case studies. | |||

| Schedule and Contents |
The establishment of the flower still life as a painting genre in Europe dates back to the early seventeenth century. In the first half of this academic year, we will analyze various aspects of the reception of flower still life painting at that time. This class will consist of a combination of lectures and student-led discussions. The course will generally follow the plan below, but the sequence and number of sessions on each topic may change depending on lecture progress and student comprehension. Week 1: Introduction Weeks 2-6: The Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II and Natural History Week 7-8: Federico Borromeo and His Thought on Art and Religion Week 9-14 Daniel Seghers and the Society of Jesus Week 15: Summary *Feedback methods will be explained in class. |

| Evaluation Methods and Policy |
Assessment of class participation (attendance, participation in discussions, etc.) (30%) and a final report or test (70%) will be made based on level of achievement regarding the learning goals. ・As a general rule, credit will not be given to students with four or more absences. ・As a general rule, late arrivals and early departures will be treated as absences. |
