Outline and Purpose of the Course By studying various issues in art history, we will aim to become familiar with the methods and thoughts that form the basis of research, while also acquiring basic knowledge of Western art.
Course Goals ・Understand the methods and thoughts of art history, including style analysis and iconography.
・Acquire basic knowledge of the development of German art in the fifteenth century.
・Learn skills for analyzing specific artworks from an art history perspective.
Schedule and Contents We will discuss German art in the fifteenth century from various perspectives, such as the relationships between faith and image, politics, society, economics, and influences from Netherlandish and Italian art. The lectures will generally follow the plan below, but the sequence and number of lectures on a given topic may change depending on lecture progress and student comprehension.

Week 1: Introduction
Weeks 2-4: "Fifteenth century": The epoque-making period in the Western art history
Weeks 5-7: German Art in the early fifteenth century: "Der weiche Stil"
Weeks 8-10: German Art in the late fifteenth century: Confrontation with the early Netherlandish painting
Weeks 11-14: "Print":Technical innovation and art
Week 15: Final Exam
Week 16: Feedback (Details will be explained in class)
Evaluation Methods and Policy Assessment of class participation (attendance, mini reports, etc.) (30%) and a final exam (70%) will be made based on level of achievement regarding the learning goals.
・As a general rule, credit will not be given to students with four or more absences.
・As a general rule, late arrivals and early departures will be treated as absences.
