Outline and Purpose of the Course Philosophy of science is a field that analyzes science from philosophical points of view. This class introduces various subfields of this increasingly diversifying discipline, so that it functions as an entrance from which attendants can proceed to study topics that interest them more deeply in the future. In this Part I, we look at the issues of the nature of science, scientific reasoning, and scientific explanation, looking both at science in general and application of those topics in particular fields.
Course Goals Understanding basic concepts and way of thinking in philosophy of science, especially in terms of what is science, what is scientific reasoning and what is scientific explanation.
Schedule and Contents We will spend two or three weeks on each of the following subjects. The lectures will be given in Japanese.
1. What is Science? (4 meetings)
2. Scientific Reasoning(4 meetings)
3. Scientific Reasoning in Particular Sciences(2 meetings)
4. Scientific Explanation(2 meetings)
5. Scientific Explanation in Particular Sciences(2 meetings)

Evaluation Methods and Policy The evaluation will be based on two writing assignments (50% each). The criteria are the level of attainment of the class goal. Be careful that if the attendant fail to submit one of two assignments, that will automatically mean a failing grade.

Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Attendants are expected to read relevant portions of the textbook before the class meeting.
Textbooks Textbooks/References Philosophy of Science: A Very Short Introduction, Samir Okasha, (Oxford University Press), The lectures will be based on the Japanese translation of this book.
