Outline and Purpose of the Course
On Mencius' personal history, Takeuchi Yoshio and Qian Mu studied previously, but their studies have problems in chronology and historical philology, above all, they are seriously insufficient on understanding about actual condition of the history of pre-imperial China and editorial characteristics of the Mencius. From such a critical view, this lecture situates Mencius in the pre-imperial history as the formation process of the despotic China by overviewing historical process before the middle Warring States and analyzing the Mencius.
Course Goals Mastery of the newest information derived from studies on the pre-imperial period, and the method of critical analyzation of literatures of ancient China
Schedule and Contents The first: Introduction
The second to the fifth: Historical transition from the middle Spring and Autumn to the middle Warring States period
The sixth and the seventh: Mencius’recognition on history
The eighth: Quantitative analysis of the Mencius
The ninth and the tenth: The order of chapters of each volume of the Mencius 
The eleventh to the fourteenth: Mencius' personal history
The fifteenth: Conclusion

Information regarding feedback will be announced in the classroom.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Generally, rating a student's small report submitted in every class (30%) and a final report (70%) which is mainly related to the lecture.
