Outline and Purpose of the Course 英文学史上の代表的な作品を紹介しながら、英文学の歴史的変遷について包括的に考える。前期は中世から18世紀前半までを扱う。本年度は叙事詩を取り上げ、中世から18世紀前半の英文学におけるこのジャンルの変遷を、テクストの抜粋を読みながら歴史的文脈の中で位置づける。
Course Goals 中世から18世紀の叙事詩を代表的なテクストに即しながら概観することを通じて、以下についての理解が包括的に深まることを目指す。
１．英文学における叙事詩の伝統
２．中世から18世紀の英文学に使われている様々な形式と英語表現の変遷
３．中世から近代にいたる、イングランドの社会と文学との関係

Evaluation Methods and Policy 中間レポート(50%)と学期末レポート(50%)により評価する。両方のレポートを提出することが単位取得の条件。題目、提出期間、方法等詳細については授業中に口頭で指示をする。
Course Requirements 後期に開講される英文学講義Bと今年度中に合わせて履修することが望ましい。
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) 辞書を丹念に引いて各週のテクストの内容を理解した上で授業に臨むこと。授業後は扱われた作品の文学史における位置づけについて考察すること。
Textbooks Textbooks/References 授業資料は予めPandA上に掲載する。終了後一定時間が経った時点で消去するので注意すること。
