Outline and Purpose of the Course Middle Chinese phonology is a fixed base point for the study of old Chinese and modern Chinese phonology. It is also indispensable for studying the various Chinese dialects and reading Chinese characters. This course provides the basic knowledge and concepts of middle Chinese phonology and introduces related topics (especially technical terms of the Chinese language, character and word dictionaries, etc.). In addition, the course introduces the relationship between middle Chinese phonology and old Chinese phonology.
Course Goals * Understand the basic concepts of middle Chinese phonology
* Be able to learn the initial consonants and compound vowels of middle Chinese phonology
* Be able to explain technical terms of Chinese phonology using phonetic terms
* Understand the formation and rough flow of books, books of justice, and rhymes
Schedule and Contents The first half of the course covers the basic concepts of middle Chinese phonology. Students must memorize the basic technical terms of middle Chinese phonology and old Chinese phonology by week 10. Students will be given some time to memorize during class as well.
Weeks 1-3. Orientation; tone phonetics, phonological theories and terms of Chinese phonology
Weeks 4-6. Chinese rhyme dictionaries; fanqie
Weeks 7-9. Rhyme tables; dialects; character sounds
Week 10. Checking the terminology of middle Chinese phonology

The second half of the course introduces topics related to middle Chinese phonology.
Weeks 11-14. Character dictionary and dictionary
Week 15. Course summary and feedback
Evaluation Methods and Policy Active participation in class discussions 20%; small test 50%; report 30%
