Outline and Purpose of the Course With the goals of acquiring a fundamental grounding in historical materials of Japanese art and improving reading comprehension of historical materials, we will read prefaces and historical manuscripts on woodblock-printed books and picture scrolls. We will take up various texts and learn methodological approaches.
Course Goals Aim to acquire fundamental knowledge of premodern historical materials, as well as elementary reading comprehension skills for characters written in a cursive style.
Schedule and Contents We will examine and read Edo period art criticism and writings on technique, picture scroll captions from each period, and ancient archival documents on the artists. Depending on student background and comprehension, we will split up the reading and ask students to do reading comprehension tasks.
Week 1: Introduction and the Foundations of Cursive Style Writing
Weeks 2-14: Reading of Woodblock Printed Books, Captions, and Archival Documents
Week 15: Summary
*Feedback methods will be explained in class.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Assessments will be based on class participation (reports, statements in class) (50%), and quizzes in class (50%).
High marks will be given to assigned section reports that show careful preparation.

Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students will be assigned portions of the text and will be asked to do some degree of reading comprehension work. They should prepare this in advance.
