Outline and Purpose of the Course In this seminar, by closely reading Italian-language literature on art history, we will aim to deepen our understanding of issues in art history, while also developing practical Italian reading comprehension skills.
Course Goals ・Acquire skills for accurately reading and comprehending Italian-language technical documents on art history.
・Acquire skills for closely examining textual content and critically reading technical works, with an awareness of the issues.
・Acquire terminology and basic knowledge of the history of Western art.
Schedule and Contents By studying primarily Giovanni Giura, "La seconda età della pittura in Santa Maria Novella" in Santa Maria Novella. La basilica e il convento, v.2 (a cura di Andrea De Marchi), Firenze 2016, pp. 97-153 and reading the literature, we will aim to understand the painting of the 1440s in the church of Santa Maria Novella.

Week 1: Introduction
Presentation of an overview of the text. Introduction of reference works and academic sites useful for self-study and explanation of class procedures and preparation methods.

Weeks 2-14: Close Reading of the Paper
We will closely read the above text and discuss its contents according to the methods indicated in the introduction. Progress will vary drastically depending on the proficiency level of the leaders, so an exact plan of each class session cannot be posted. However, we will arrange for each student to have the opportunity to present a close reading at least once every one or two weeks. Supplementary explanations will be given for difficult terminology and historical events.

Week 1: Final Exams

*Feedback methods will be explained in class.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Assessment of class participation (attendance, presentation of assigned close reading sections) (50%) and final exam (50%) will be made based on level of achievement regarding the learning goals.

・Points may be deducted for absences.
・As a general rule, credit will not be given to students with four or more absences.
・As a general rule, late arrivals and early departures will be treated as absences.
Course Requirements ・Have acquired an elementary or higher level of Italian.
・Students are not required to have prior knowledge of Western art history, but each student should attend class actively, with their own awareness of the issues, and having looked up unknown vocabulary ahead of time.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) As preparation for class, students should independently conduct close readings of the text, and look up unknown vocabulary. They should also strive to correctly understand the grammatical structure and make appropriate translations into Japanese.
