Outline and Purpose of the Course The purpose of this course is to acquire methods for thought and research regarding art history. This will be done by taking up specific issues in Western art history and deeply examining them from diverse points of view. In the second half of this year, we will study the relation between the Reformation and art, while also conducting detailed analyses of related case studies.
Course Goals ・Understand art history methodology, including style analysis, iconography, and reading comprehension of documents at that time.
・Improve discernment of the reception of flower still life painting in the seventeenth century.
Schedule and Contents The Reformation in the sixteenth century Germany caused serious discussions on the usage of images in Christianity. Christianity prohibits the idolatry. The usage of images like paintings and statutes in rituals had presented potential problems. In this lecture, we will analyze the criticism of Protestant against the usage of images in rituals and the reactions of Roman Catholic. This class will consist of a combination of lectures and student-led discussions. The course will generally follow the plan below, but the sequence and number of sessions on each topic may change depending on lecture progress and student comprehension.

Week 1-2: Introduction
Weeks 3-8: Protestant’s Criticism and Iconoclasm
Weeks 9-14: Counter-Reformation of the Roman Catholic, Focusing on the Trent Council
Week 15: Summary
*Feedback methods will be explained in class.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Assessment of class participation (attendance, participation in discussions, etc.) (30%) and a final report or test (70%) will be made based on level of achievement regarding the learning goals.

Study outside of Class (preparation and review) When writing reports or preparing the test, each student will need to read related literature and conduct a survey study based on this. With this goal in mind, please secure enough time for learning outside of class.
