| Outline and Purpose of the Course | The purpose of this course is to present the history of how doctrine formed during early Christianity prior to the development of Council of Chalcedon (451 AD) along individual main themes. Doctrine refers to Christian teachings preached within the church, but various problems arose around the legitimacy of doctrine in early Christianity (for example, the problems of Christology and soteriology, etc.), and new doctrine was always being formed in response to that. In this course, we shall direct our attention to the tense relationship between Christianity, philosophy, and the Roman Empire, and analyze the doctrines and concepts formed by church fathers. | |||
| Course Goals | ・Master mainly basic knowledge on the central problems facing the formation of doctrine prior to around the 5th century, and be able to analyze the main literature of the period, while historically placing and examining the thinking of church fathers and doctrines in early Christianity. | |||
| Schedule and Contents |
The first semester theme for this year is "History of early Christian doctrine." After orientation in the first session, the course will proceed on the following topics. One topic will be covered in each session. 1．Orientation 2．Trinitarianism of Athanasius 3．Trinitarianism of the Cappadocia church fathers 4．Development of Trinitarianism from the 4th century 5．4th century Christology 6．Apollinarism and the Orthodox church 7．Antiochene Christology 8．Theotokos controversy 9．Western World and Pope Leo I 10．Council of Chalcedon 11．Origin of the soul 12．Original sin and corruption 13．Grace and appointment 14．The end of the Pelagian controversy 15．Conclusion, review, and comments on papers |
