Outline and Purpose of the Course In this seminar, by closely reading English-language literature on art history, we will aim to deepen our understanding of issues in art history, while developing practical English reading comprehension skills.
Course Goals ・Acquire skills for accurately reading and comprehending English-language literature on art history.
・Acquire the basic knowledge required for the study of art history.
・Develop an understanding of the social and economic context behind works of art and the ability to synthesise and reflect on issues in art history.
Schedule and Contents As in the last academic year, we will continue our close reading of "The Business of Art. Contracts and the Commissioning Process in Renaissance Italy" (Michelle O'Malley, New Haven and London, 2005), and aim to deepen our understanding of the economic aspects of works of art in Renaissance Italy. (This year, we will start reading from Chapter 1.)

Week 1: Introduction
An overview explanation of the text to be read. We will introduce reference works and academic sites useful for self-study and notify students of class procedures and preparation methods. Depending on the number of students enrolled, we will also determine the parts of the text assigned to each participant.

Weeks 2-14: Close Reading of the Text
We will closely read the above text and discuss its contents, while reading by turns. Progress will vary depending on the proficiency level of the readers, so an exact plan of each class session cannot be posted. We will arrange for each student to have the opportunity to present a close reading at least once every one or two weeks. Supplementary explanations will be given for difficult terminology and historical events.

Week 15: Final Exam

Week 16: Feedback (details will be explained in class)
Evaluation Methods and Policy Assessment of class participation (active participation in the class and presentation of a close reading of the assigned part of the text) (50%) and a final exam (50%) will be made based on level of achievement regarding the learning goals.
・As a general rule, credit will not be given to students with four or more absences.
・As a general rule, late arrivals and early departures will be treated as absences.
Course Requirements ・Students are not required to have prior knowledge of art history, but are expected to come to class prepared and to participate earnestly and with their own awareness of the issues.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Before class, students should prepare by conducting close readings of the text, looking up unknown vocabulary, trying to understand the grammatical structure correctly, and translating the text into appropriate Japanese.
